THERMOS: feedback instrument for students
This project aims to develop a feedback instrument (THERMOS) that allows students to monitor their progress and to receive support. THERMOS will combine information on study behaviour, study experience and study progress.

Over a third of the bachelor students at the UU experience study delay or dropout (VSNU, KUO, Institutional Graduation Rates 2012 Cohort). The underlying reasons that cause this are sub-optimal study behaviour, low well-being and demotivation. Learning environments in which students monitor their progress and receive support can improve study behaviour and motivation.
Project description & Goals
This project aims to develop a feedback instrument for students: THERMOS. THERMOS will contribute to creating a learning environment that provides students with optimum support by improving their approach to their studies. In this project, information on how students study (study behaviour) and how they experience the learning environment (study experience) are integrated with data on study progress (OSIRIS). As part of this process, students may receive support from tutors and study advisors.
THERMOS will also help these tutors and study advisors to monitor and support students’ study behaviour, experience and progress, thereby aiding in their dialogue with students. If information is aggregated to the group level, lecturers can be informed about the learning environment within their course in its entirety.
THERMOS will be implemented in the LearnLytics platform and will expand the existing platform with:
- surveys about study behaviour and experience
- linking to progress data from OSIRIS
- a feedback module with visualizations and narrative feedback
These modules form the THERMOS feedback instrument. The instrument will be evaluated formatively and summarily with all stakeholders.
